Not to rain on anyone's parade, but you will obviously find bias answers to these questions in this forum.
1. Yes, Asterisk runs on BSD
2. But you will find greater support and much easier use when run on Linux...why?...because Asterisk was written by Linux people to run on Linux. It has to be ported to run on BSD and as I found out last night, the Asterisk port appears to be broken with the new 7.0-RELEASE of FreeBSD.
3. When it comes time to ask a question there are many more times the number of Linux users who can offer advice. BSD support is there but very limited and sometimes you must wait days if not weeks for an answer, that is if anyone answers your post.
That said I still use FreeBSD but like I said, last night I found out the hard way that BSD and Asterisk don't always play nice together. Good luck.

Most questions in ast-user list are concerning dialplans and which
phone is the best :)
