I have now borrowed the alloca.h from another machine and taken the
above hurdle, but now I am getting this one ...
I have googled for the error message and tons of stuff is showing up
(though none specifically in respect of a missing resolv library) but
I can't seem to get any further now.
resolv is the DNS/gethostbyname resolver library, if that helps. you're
probably missing a -L somewhere which points to the location of the library.

Thanks, but it's probably not that simple. OSX uses a database called
NetInfo and a resolver called lookupd to do name resolution. The
resolver library may not be there at all and I might need to find
another wrapper for that.
So, anybody who has run into this before, please drop us a hint ;-)

darwin however is based on freebsd, and the ease of which a number of
freebsd ported apps have made their appearance on darwin/osx would mean
that the complexity here is just finding which library to link against.
