is the OSS Channel module required to use as a Voicemail Box? I am using 2
speakerphone modems to answer calls but wont play sounds or recognize
digits. If I compile in the oss module it freezes loading the module. If you
can help please do.

No, although I don't know how you would check it otherwise except by
calling it. Also, the modem driver is still half-duplex and that kinda
presents some problems at this point.
As for it freezing on the OSS, a couple of things:
1) Be sure your sound card is full duplex and supported by linux in full
duplex mode
2) Don't run ESD, if you do it will cause problems
3) Be sure nothing is using the sound card when you try to run it.
