Hello all,
I am trying to get in contact with someone that has access to the
app_videoswitch package. I am wanting to try out an idea and for it to work
I need app_videoswitch. So, Neil, if you see this PLEASE get in touch with
me. Actually, if anyone has a copy let me know.

Hey Chuck,
You might want to take a look at app_conference. We merged Neil's
code back into it and improved it significantly
I just recieved 3 mails saying the same thing. lol. am currently browsing trunk so will be letting you know how it goes. we will be using h264 video only in the beginning and seeing how many streams we can broadcast to multiple clients to really stress test things. also no sip. pure iax2 to make sure the accounting doesn't get screwed. the structure we are wanting is something like below
webcam from home ---h.264 stream---> asterisk w/ app_conference & prepaid calling cards module ---h.264 stream---> apache server ---h.264---> end client
hope it works. lol

Hmm, this might prove problematic. As of right now, Asterisk does
not support video codec negotiation in IAX2. Actually, it is the
protocol that does not support it. We had an entire discussion about
it at Astridevcon about this and we are pushing for proper video
support in the protocol, but it's not there yet.
On the other hand, we have patched our Asterisk servers to support a
crude form of video codec negotiation in IAX2, which is enough for
our purposes. I can send you the patch , but it is definitely not
ready for prime time...

I see .. nice way to rebuild a live streaming server using asterisk.
I guess that the subject displayed on the webcam must be pretty
interesting to be broacasted and charged with prepaid card !!!

well. actually there won't be much need for negotiation or transcoding as the codec will be 1 codec that we decide (h.264) all asterisk will have to do is relay the stream. do you know if that would be a problem?

actually yes it is. especially with the calling card functionality that asterisk supports. that means billing/access control is built in instead of having to code a control system seperatly for some other streamer. added to that the IAX2 protocol wich would ensure that the control connection and data connection doesn't get split (freeloaders that drop the sip control connection to stop having to pay) so we have complete control of what happens on the connection.
yeah. it will cost a bit more on the bandwidth side. but once we get enough going we will just buy a flat rate connection and good is.
and to be totally honest I'm not even sure if this will even work. the girls just asked if it were possible because they want to get away from the agency where they now are. so I am looking into it. I'm thinking that it is possible and that I can get it going. worth a try.

We have a similar approach in our systems, where we only use one
video codec (Theora) with no transcoding. You will probably not be
able to successfully negotiate a video codec over IAX, but my guess
is if you push video frames over an already established audio
connection, things might just work. app_conference does not do any
video codec check or negotiation - any video frame is passed along to
the eligible conference members regardless of what's inside.

mihai,
that is exactly what we need to do except with the h.264 codec (or is Theora better quality/bandwidth wise than h.264?). how did you get yours working?

On technical terms, H.264 is significantly better than Theora. The
quality is slightly better at the same bandwidth, but what really
makes it a better choice is the fact that it was designed with
streaming in mind. On the other hand, the licensing proved to be a
pain, which is why we decided to go with Theora.
We did a bunch of changes to Asterisk in order to get this working.
We first added Theora to the list of accepted codecs. Then we
changed the way codec selection works, so we could get some
rudimentary video codec negotiation going in IAX2. That part is not
very polished and I don't think it is worth submitting upstream,
since IAX video codec negotiation is going to get a lot better in the
following months (as a result of the discussions we had at Astridevcon).
