I'm a little confused at this point. Are there any PSTN line interface
cards which can currently be used with asterisk? Could this system be
used in it's current state as a PBX? I have read and I understand that
there is some promise for using the lucent modems as the PSTN line
interface cards, what is the status of this? What are name brands of
these modems.

Okay, here's the status of the Lucent winmodem stuff....
The latest release of the open source ltmodem stuff *does* claim to have
ring detection *and* DTMF detection. If true, that solves the strongest
of the technical limitations. However, there is another problem: The
ltmodem stuff is all userspace at this point with no kernel driver, so I
don't know yet how I'm going to turn that into a file descriptor...
In other news, QuickNet will (hopefully) be sending me a LineJack soon for
me to get working with Asterisk and with any luck that will present one
solution for getting calls into Asterisk with small numbers of ports.
