I think it might be a good idea to designate a night that we have a
weekly asterisk-doc conference where we share what we are working on,
what we have done over the week, and what challenges we face in the
upcoming weeks. I feel this will give some focus to the documentation
project and keep us moving forward, rather than getting in a stall and
running around in circles with little organization.
For the first conference, I am going to write out some topics of concern
(perhaps too strong of a word) which I feel need to be addressed just so
that everyone is on the same page. Of particular importance is how the
documentation project and the wiki project are going to work hand in
hand. If everyone is on the same level, then I feel things will be much
smoother. I think we can all agree that the doc project and the wiki
project are NOT attempting to compete against each other, rather we are
both working towards the same goal; to document Asterisk.
For the first meeting I would really like to have Olle Johansson and
Rich Adamson of the wiki group (plus whoever else contributes heavily to
the wiki project, Olle, I'll leave that up to you) along with Jared
Smith, Peter Grace, Josh Rollyson and myself. Of course everyone who is
participating in either project are welcome to join, but these seem to
be the most prominent people in the projects that I have seen so far. I
would also like to see Brian K. West participating a bit more as we had
a discussion tonight about the extensions.conf section of the document,
and he had some good ideas.
I will attempt to get some thoughts organized this week, and perhaps
schedule something for next Sunday night ? We'll have to see what night
everyone is mostly available, but I would imagine Sunday night might be
our best bet.. ?

Makes sense but due to the holiday I'll be unable to be around next
Sunday. AOL dial up isn't exactly the preferred Internet access of
choice but gotta use what you have

Great idea... now that we're starting to get a "critical mass" of people
involved in the project, I think communication will certainly be of key
concern.

Definitely... what would really be cool is to document what we discuss
in the conference, so that people who can't make it still know what's
going on. Let's try to either have someone take notes and post them to
the mailing list, or post the notes to the website. (Greg?)

Sunday night will be bad for me as well, unless I somehow get high-speed
internet access in my truck for Christmas :-) I'll be somewhere on the
road in the backwoods of Wyoming...

That's fine, we don't need to do it next Sunday. Whenever you guys are
free, let me know, and we'll schedule it for then. Is Sunday night bad
all around, or is it just NEXT Sunday ? (which I understand as it IS the
holiday season :))

Yah, I know you will. At least we can count on THAT :)

Since I will be using Asterisk to connect, I could record the meeting
and then we could do one of two or three things:
1) Record the meeting and post it as an audio file on the website for
archival purposes
2) Record the meeting, then after, go over the file and either pull out
the relevant parts, or create a transcript of the discussion like they
do on TV! :)
3) Do both?
4) Do what Jared suggested and just create notes (however, things could
get missed...)

i truly appreciate it but I doubt I can hijack the 1 phoneline to my
grandparents place long enough. Constant battle for the PC and 1 phone
line. I think i'm just gotta take a vacation from all this nerd stuff
and deal with it when i get back.

I can post them on the web page without a problem... But I can't take
notes at all.
Maybe we can "monitor" the confrence, and have someone play it back
taking down notes? Once done, they can send it to me to post on the
web site.

probably best to have written notes for those unable to attend and for
later reference. Depending how it is organized it could be a long
recording with very little getting done besides people arguing back and
forth =) I guess a recorded copy would be best for later review but I
don't know how many people will want to actually sit thru and listen to
it all again. Notes seem fine to me but the job of making them from the
conference would be quite a chore and should probably be spread around
those that contribute to the project so it's not a royal pain in the ass
for 1 person every conference to be responsible for making answer of it
after the fact.

Since we want to have it recorded.. perhaps we should do it in an IRC
channel where the text can be logged automatically, then posted to the
website instantly... ?
A voice conference might be nice, but if we want to keep notes and a
transcript of the conference, a voice conference might be a little much
to take on. The time spent on transcribing the voice conference could
be better utilized in creating documentation :)
Also, if it's in an IRC channel, no one has to worry about what kind of
bandwidth they have, so everyone can participate.
I'm thinking the asterisk-doc room would be good for this, and during
conferences, we'll just make the room moderated and give people voice
who are going to participate in the discussion.

might be better but i don't know how some concepts can be expressed in
text versus an audio dialog. Taking notes can be rather easy in an audio
conference if we do the following
Raise a question w/ possible options
Debate the question
decide on the conclusion and log that as the result of that order of
business
So the way i would see it is any issues raised over the course of the wk
on the mailing list or irc can be debated during the weekly conference
then a ruling made. Kinda following the format of town hall meetings
where as all issues would have to be filled prior so an agenda can be
put together to avoid total khaos.

Why not make the recordings available via a website? We can have the
raw conf recordings available immediately after the conf tares down and
then we could have edited versions available for the really good content.
We've got nothing but bandwidth to burn and HD's are cheap.

Well, sunday night is defined as Sunday night Swedish time or? :-)
Usually, Leif goes to bed and loggs of IRC when I have my morning tea reading mail...
Sunday late night is monday morning for me. And this weekend is family time.
