Hi-
We rely heavily on the use of extension lists (our PBX calls them "extension
groups") -- basically, a pseudo-extension is setup with a list of other
extensions. When somebody dials the pseudo-extension, it will try every
extension in that list until somebody picks up.
Is this already possible to do? Playing around, I think I can make it
dial every extension in the list, in order, but I want it to short-circuit
when it hits one that picks up.
I'd be happy to help coding this, but wanted to make sure that it didn't
already exist, and nobody's working on it already, etc.

This functionality is already there. Consider, for example, the following
example:
When an incoming call is detected, first the listed three channels (two
local phones and one Internet phone) will be rung for up to 12 seconds. If
one of them picks up, the call will be bridged and the other two calls
will be closed. The connected party can either transfer, park, or hangup
the call. Assuming it is hungup, then the processing of the list will
stop there. If no one answers after 12 seconds (or if everyone is busy),
then it will go and dial the next entry and try extension 4300 for 12
seconds with the same rules. If that extension doesn't answer, it will
answer, playback a message and send them to voicemail. If extension 4300
is busy, it will answer and playback a "busy" message instead.

It already does that by default. If you pick up, then when you hang up,
it will return a "-1" causing a hangup, and the end of processing.

It's already there, I believe, but if this functionality isn't sufficient,
let me know. Maybe we can work something out.

Yep, I have no idea what I was thinking.
I do have another question, though. We rely heavily on the Northern
Telecom way of signalling that there's voicemail waiting on an extension.
It uses a different voltage to indicate that there's voicemail waiting.
All our phones (Nortel Meridian) flash the little message indicator light
on the odd voltage.
Might the Atlas be able to be convinced to do the different voltage (I
can't find any specs right now, but I can hook a multimeter next time I'm
in the office)?

OIC.... I have a similar such phone.

It might be. The Atlas can pass caller ID and such, so it would seem
reasonable to me that it could do somethign like this with the right
firmware mods.

I've also thought about how some phones display text messages. I've put
in some primitives for passing text messages along channels and using them
from applications.
