This is the first public release of the product. It is still definitely
ALPHA code, but it is good enough that I'm able to run my business on it.
While still quite immature, Asterisk currently has these features
*implemented* (in no particular order):
* Support for Adtran Atlas product family
* Support for Internet PhoneJack
* Extensible Channel API (Primary channel is currently the Adtran
Atlas product family)
* Application API for writing generic PBX apps *very* quickly
* Simple Voicemail (record, playback, delete, navigate, e-mail
notification)
* Check voicemail via the web
* Simple file playback (WAV and G723 simple frame implemented)
* File format API
* Extension Directory
* Call Bridging
* Call Transfer
* Intercom (using sound card)
* Per-thread scheduler and I/O management routines
* Consistent configuration file format
* Extension routing logic
* Powerful Codec Translation API (current translators are g.723.1
and gsm -- but g.723.1 cannot be released yet due to patent
issues)
* Efficient frame management API
* Dynamic Module Support (including loading/unloading modules on
the fly)
* Simple logger
* Threaded architecture
* Minimal (optional) Graphical Console (gtk and a broken kde one)
* Distribution under GPL
Features in the works are:
* Call Conferencing
* Call Parking
* Calling Card Application
* Voice over IP Integration, possibly with gnophone and OpenH323
(http://naboo.flygroup.org/gnophone)
* More applications, more codecs, and most importantly, more
channels
* A few secret plans I haven't announced yet :)
I eagerly seek developer input and contribution to the project
(particularly someone familiar with the OpenH323 project who might be able
to help build a channel module for it). Please keep in mind this release
is for developers only -- if you don't have a quicknet card or an Adtran
Atlas, you won't be able to connect to it yet (this will change as soon as
IP telephony support is added).
If you'd like to contribute but are not a coder, you can help with testing
and documentation. Please visit the web site for more information.
You may direct any questions to the list or to myself.
