WildIX is a softphone using the IAX protocol and running on Windows OS. You can download it from WildIx's website. It is runnig on Win32 OS.
In this tutorial we will explain how to use WildIx with Asterisk server. If you need help for setting up your own server, please read Asterisk installation tutorials
After you download it and un-zip it, you do not have to install anything, just run "wildix.exe" and the phone will appear on your screen. Also, at the bottom of the screen, in the system tray, next to the clock, a "blue asterisk" icon (five angle star or alike) should have appeared also.
Step1: Right-click on the "blue asterisk" icon and a small menu will appear. Click on the top option - "Audio settings..." - and a menu with 3 select-boxes should appear. In the select options should be "windows sound mapper ...", your audiocard, and probably some other audio and/or usb device you have on your computer. Select your audiocard in it (or the usb/other device you want to use). Click "OK".
Step2: Again right-click on the "blue asterisk" in the system-tray. The second menu from the top is - "Codec settings..." - now you can select the codecs you want/need to use to connect to your VoIP provider/server by clicking on the check-boxes. If you are not sure what codec do you need you can simply select all of them (mark all the check-boxes).Click "OK" (and don't worry if it does not remember them - try do this step after all other steps in this tutorial). Click "OK".
Step3: Again right-click on the "blue asterisk" icon on the system-tray. The third option from the top option is labelled "Accounts...". This is actually the main setup part.So another setup box will appear.
3.1: The first option is labelled "Account name" - fill in the name of the account you wish to call - the name matters only to you - so write something simple in order to easily distinguish the accounts and their providers/servers.
3.2: Next is the "Register host" option - in the text field you must enter the address of the asterisk/VoIP server to which you will connect either by IP address (like 10.20.30.40 , or by domain name like "my-asterisk.server.net").
3.3: Next is the "Account login" - there you type the user-name given by your VoIP provider (or the one you created by yourself if the asterisk/VoIP-server is yours) with which you will identify to the VoIP server.
3.4: Next is the "Account password" - there you type the "secret" given to you by your VoIP provider (or the one you created by yourself if the asterisk/VoIP-server is yours) with which you will identify to the VoIP server along with the user-name you have specified.
3.5: Finllay, click on the "register on startup" check-box, and then "Save".
Do not forget to click "Save" every time, or it is like you have done nothing. Then click "Close".
Step4: Restart the phone, and then when you start it over you must see the name of the account you have created typed just over the "Wildix" logo on the screen on the phone, where on the picture of the phone in the tutorial is shown "IAX-TEST" (if not check that you have followed all the steps correctly and all the setup options are correct).
Asterisk test configuration:
this is an example code of what your iax.conf and extensions.conf must contain:
iax.conf
[iax-test]
type=friend
host=dynamic
username=iax-test ; here you type your username
secret=my.password ; here you type your password
context=iax-test ; must exist in extentsions.conf
permit=0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
extensions.conf
[test]
exten => 1,1,Answer() ;Dial 1 for echo test
exten => 1,n,Echo()
exten => 1,n,HangUp()
WildIx uses small amount of system resource and also it is made very simple to use. The six small dot-buttons are for the switch lines with (they are all enumerated). To the left of the "Wildix" logo you see the current active line. There is also the "Hold" button (if you wish to hold the call, and to start "music on hold", if enabled), the "Transfer" button (to transfer calls to other lines, external or internal) and the "Mute" button (only to mute your microphone).
Now all that’s left to do is enter digits/address and talk cheaply over VoIP.
