Another reply on my own post. Now I'm offering money to solve this
issue. There must be a Asterisk/libpri problem. Please mail me
off-list for more information and tell me your price.

As requested again my problem. See also my previous postings:
http://lists.three-dimensional.net/pipermail/bristuff-users/2008-February/000018.html http://lists.three-dimensional.net/pipermail/bristuff-users/2008-February/000019.html
4-port HFC (Junghanns quadbri). Mostly everything works good and I can
dial in and out. But sometimes I get "cause 34 - Circuit/channel
congestion" on dialing out. Definitely there is a free B-channel...
I see nothing with "pri debug", so there must be a Asterisk-internal
variable telling Asterisk all B-channels are in use on this span.
But I can dial in on this span from the outside. And AFTER dialing in
it is also possible to dial out again. Another solution is to restart
Asterisk.
I'm willing to try everything to solve this problem. So please bomb me
with hints :-)

Hi, some thoughts/questions...
Are you compiling with MMX or SSE extensions enabled for Echo
Cancelling in Zaptel? I remember having very strange behaviour when I
tried this about a year ago. If you are, then perhaps try reverting to
the default settings.
Do you change any settings at-all from the default Zaptel+Bristuff
during the compile?
Can you change your ISDN signalling to PTP?
Is anything else connected to the ISDN circuit except the Asterisk box?
Cheers,
Steve

Oh, which bristuff and which Zaptel version? I did not see that detail
in any of your previous posts.

We got recently (last month) the same type of "cause 34 - Circuit/channel
congestion" on dialing out (nothing on incoming calls).
It turned out to come from one Telco line which had "electrical problems".
Our Telco could at once notice those issues when alerted.
Before that, we could see by ourselves that one of the 3 lines didn't behave as it should (its light remainded turned off)

Hi Steve,
I use a standard Bristuff package from Junghanns with no
modifications. Just downloaded the package and "./install". At the
moment I have version 0.3.0-PRE-1y-p, but earlier with 0.3.0-PRE-1y-k
it was the same. Linux kernel is 2.6.22-2-686.
Signalling is PTMP. Why do you think changing to PTP should help?
There is nothing but Asterisk on the ISDN circuit.
I also thried setting lbo=0 in zaptel.conf as suggested in
http://www.ip-phone-forum.de/showthread.php?t=140061
(German Asterisk discussion on the same topic as here) But didn't
help.
One thing is confusing me: After having the "cause 34" I did a "zap
show channel 1". Result is within other lines
PRI Flags: Call
Why "Call"? I think this has to be empty. Can anyone confirm?
Regards,
Gunnar

My 2 cents ...
One question :
When did the first "cause 34 - Circuit/channel congestion" appear in log files ?
How many of those do you have daily ?
For the case we got, rebooting the server instantly stopped those messages but still, root cause came from Telco lines.

The first "cause 34" we had some days after set up Asterisk. The pbx
before (non-Asterisk) never had those problems.
Today we had 70 calls. Four or five times I had "cause 34", but free
channels. Restarting Asterisk with "restart now" and it worked again
for some time.
Today I talked to Swisscom (Switzerland telecom). They will have a look
to the line in the next days.

The first "cause 34" we had some days after set up Asterisk.
In my case, we had 30 days of operations without a single message and then up to 20 messages a day (3 x BRI)

Another update: It seems that layer 1 is not active the whole time. If
the ISDN line is in idle mode I have the "cause 34" errors. After
dialing in the layer is active again and I can dial out. But after
some time the layer 1 is in idle mode again.
Is there any way to force the layer 1 to be always up? Some option for
the qozap driver? Or is there some way to modify the soruce code to
handle the idle mode?

You have to ask your telco to disable energy saving.
We had the same issue with a couple of customers. One call to the telco
was enough to fix it.

Is there no way to handle it on the Asterisk side? Something to force
the layer 1 to be up all the time? Does the qozap driver detect the
idle mode/ energy saving?

There's no way to keep the layer 1 up with the qozap driver.
You really need your telco to disable it

Alternatively have the ISDN service changed from PtMP to PTP - The PTP
protocol involves the 2 ends negotiating the use of the D-Channel in
advance, unlike PtMP which is a more passive affair.
PtP seems to send layer 1 and layer 2 keepalives on this basis.
I always find PtP is a far more appropriate signalling type of ISDN anyway.
