ISDN4linux (with some hisax card - for example Teles) would appear to
be a relatively low-cost solution which would provice caller-id and
two channels. The AT command set appears to be pretty much like the
usual AT voice commands.
The web page
http://w1.2667.telia.com/~u266700740/linux/i4lfax/index.html for the
i4lfax project says that "ISDN4Linux has proved to work well as a
voice-carrier" so perhaps it would be a good alternative to analog
equipment in some locations.

Hi
I did start working on this a while ago, but haven't got round to
seeing if it actually works. One problem I did have, is that if it is
recording or playing, and full duplex is required, the
recording/playing has to be stopped so that the record and play
commands can be sent in one at command. Does asterisk ever not use
full duplex?

telos EDV Systementwicklung GmbH has developed an ISDN to H323 gateway
for use with the openh323 project. It uses the ttyI devices to accept
and initiate ISDN calls . The source code is under GPL .
Haven't tried it, but I think the source code might be usefull to create
the appropriate ISDN channels for the Asterisk PBX.
Source and binaries available on http://www.telos.de/linux/H323

No, it is always full duplex. This is the problem with the modem drivers.
