I came across asteriskpbx while searching for answers
for my own project. Asteriskpbx is very interesting. I
hope it's not a dying project.
This is what I'm looking for: I'm trying to connect a
PC to listen for incoming calls. Then, depending on the
extension, the system would forward the call to voicemail
that would be saved as a .wav or mp3 file or another
format. I don't care to have phones or PCs linked to
each extension.
This doesn't seem very demanding, right? I'm not very
knowledgeable in this area, but asteriskpbx appears to
be a good platform. My only other requirement is that I
may need to support a large number of extensions. What
are your thoughts? Is this possible? What hardware can
I use? I would like to try a POTS solution first, and
then (if successful) move to T1 or higher.

*nods* all that is already there.

Asterisk already does this. Right now we have fairly limited hardware
support. I'd be happy to discuss it with you though. For pots, the
fastest thing would be to fix up our driver for the LineJack. For higher
technologies, the Adtran Atlas is our platform of choice.

What needs fixing? (Not that I'm capable of doing so myself, but I'm just
interested in knowing whether this is vapourware or actually has some
prospect of being done by someone in the foreseeable future.)
The state machine for a LineJack is slightly different than that of a
PhoneJack, because the LineJack gets a ring for an incoming call and then
answers.
