Okay.

My proposal is to use the soundcard to do the sound-processing, connect

mode) and use Asterisk as the glue to connect it all together (QUESTION:
can I route between two instances of Asterisk over the net using
say GSM compression ?)
You'd have to figure out how to link the sound card and modem stuff
together. And I warn you -- speaking from experience -- i have yet to
find a well supported full duplex sound card in linux.

If I do do this, how much of this is already out there (I notice the
source code has a 'modem driver' as well as soundcard/oss stuff).
the modem driver is implemented mostly, but most modems are only
half-duplex, so i haven't begun the simulation stuff. The oss driver has
some race conditions in it and sometimes deadlocks :( Both could use some
work, but I've pretty much decided that Asterisk should remain a "server"
program, and that phones themselves (sound cards or real phones) belong in
friendier client programs.

Hi All,
I'm trying to establish a phone<->internet<->phone gateway.
With voice mail, etc.
Now, I'm also being cheap about this (the object is to save me money
on calls between Australia and Canada, so I'm not sure spending US$600
on two ILJ cards is the right solution at this point).
At the moment, I have computers connected to the net in Australia and
Canada, each of these has a voice modem/speakerphone and a full-duplex
soundcard.
My proposal is to use the soundcard to do the sound-processing, connect
this to the voice modem mic/spkr ports, use the modem to dial (in VCON
mode) and use Asterisk as the glue to connect it all together (QUESTION:
can I route between two instances of Asterisk over the net using
say GSM compression ?)
If I do do this, how much of this is already out there (I notice the
source code has a 'modem driver' as well as soundcard/oss stuff).
