Hi,
I'm new to telephony but in my spare time (I am a university student) I am
trying to learn a little bit more about it. I stumbled across the
asterisk project, which looks very exciting, on freshmeat.
My question is how exactally is the Atlas hooked up to the linux machine?
I spent about 3 hours last night reading on Adtran's web site and other
bits of telephony tech. documentation that I could find, but I could not
figure out how the Atlas is hooked up to the machine. i've seen other
vendors (but didn't see any on adtran's site) who offer expansion cards
that accept T1/E1/DSX1 inputs .. is this how it is being done? Some sort
of card? Or are we just using the 10BaseT interface to the Atlas?
Thanks for your answers, and this looks to be a very interesting project.
When I get back to school (and my T3 and phone line and linux machine)
I'll give it a whirl and perhaps I can hack on the voice modem channel
driver (if it ever needs any work)
Good luck with your project!
As an aside, I see that Mark you're in Auburn, AL. I go to school in
Oxford. Did you make it to the Ole Miss game this year? Hotty Toddy =)
Merry Christmas!
James

First, your subject reminded me of an old DOS snippet: "Who's this
General Failure and why is he reading my hard drive?"

Yes, it is exciting. Today, I placed a call to some friends in teh U.S.
using my 14.4k connection here in Egypt. It definitely would lag out and
disconnect eventually since the PhoneJack card doesn't seem to support
silence compression on Linux yet (I sent off an e-mail asking about this
just now) and the 14.4k can't handle the full duplex call.
Still, I was able to prove a lot. Not only was I able to call the U.S.,
but I was able to route my extension in the U.S. to my phone here in Egypt
so that when my friend called me and dialed my extension, it rang my phone
here :)

Of course, teh right way to interface the Atlas to Asterisk would be
10BaseT, but unfortunately this is not supported by the Atlas yet.
However, I assure you that Adtran will almost certainly make the addition
if Asterisk is able to help them sell more hardware.
So, the way it interfaces right now is with Frame Relay. I use a snagoma
FT1 card (they're very useful cards -- just shouldn't be necessary for
this application).

Yes, it needs work on figuring how to make it full duplex or simulated
full duplex.

I can use all the luck I can get :)

Believe it or not, I'm not into football much, albeit that's sacrliledge.
