Dear List,
I'm new on computer telephony and I need some help to understand how
things happen. I'm from Brazil, and here, we have a E1 from the Telephone
Company (a pair of coaxial cables with BNC connectors) and this E1 can
have 30 voice channels. The TELCO gave us only one phone number, the
principal number for this E1 (eg. 345-2300) and all extensions are the
following numbers. My questions are:
1) What kind of hardware do I need to have to use this Linux PBX? The
hardware to interface with the E1 from the TELCO, the hardware to enable
all the extensions (they are all telephone equipments and not computer
telephones like Internet Phone Jack). type of hardware, model and any
information you can give me;
2) The E1 has 30 channels for simmultaneous use but can I have more the 30
extensions? Like 50 extensions to share this 30 channels from the E1?
3) How my telephone extensions are going to be fisically connected with
the hardware on the computer? I'll have (50 extensions) 50 pairs of
telephone wire connected to the computer?
4) Basically, I want to use a computer PBX instead of a normal PBX. The
extensions need to be normal phone equipments. The only computer used will
be the PBX.
In my view, someone will dial the 345-2300 phone number (the main number),
the computer will answer the call, ask for an extension number, and
transfer the call to the extension. If the extension is busy or
unavaiable, the caller can be transfered to a voicemail or to an operator.
To place a call, from any extension, just to dial a 0 and get an outside
phone line to place the call.
Can I do this is asterisk??? Sorry for my english. Any help will be
welcomed. Maybe this is aswered already but I couldn find a history for
the mailing list....

Yes, this is what the Adtran hardware w would do. It also supports the
inward dialing so that it would be possible to assign each phone number,
for example, a different interface even if there are only 30 physical
lines.
