- I had to change the makefile to add -ltermcap to the LIBS variable,
because my libreadline (version 4.1) needs it. (autoconf would be
nice...)
I can add that to the makefile. Autoconf would be nice. Any volunteers?

it is nice to run as few programs as possible as root. Why root status
required? I commented out the check for root access in asterisk.c, and
the code seems to run fine until I get an audiofile error, so getting
that lib will be my next task...
It's documented in the readme. You need to install the patched
libaudiofile or disable loading the library.
The reason it runs as root is because some interfaces (e.g. VoFR) rely on
root acess and i was at one point going to setup permissions correctly on
the voicemail. The check could presumably be moved into the drivers for
VoFR for example.

That would be great. Remember that Asterisk is GPL'd so your speech
recognition software would also need to be released under GPL.
I just downloaded asterisk for the first time, and I have hardly had
time to look at it.
Here are two quick first comments:

I had this (nearly) completed, actually. Let's see if I can dig this
up. I recently moved to a place where I don't have a phone line, so it's
crippled my work on drivers for Asterisk (I have 3 devices I plan on
making drivers for).
