Hi there,
I'm looking for a solution for a fully-featured video-enabled video
telephony and information provision system. I need to be able to have:
- one-to-one video calls between client end-points
- a queueing system for a "helpdesk/reception", with the ability for
the receptionist to place video calls on hold for pick-up by
consultants
- the ability to have multi-way video conferences
- the ability for callers to be connected to a menu-driven "video on
demand" system, with at least basic pause/play/fast-forward/rewind
control of the video playback
The client devices use H.264 video encoding and G.711/Speex audio
coding.
Is this something that Asterisk would be able to provide? I've been
reading web-sites, wikis and forums, and playing around with a trial
installation for over a week now but get the feeling that this is, at
the very least, at the cutting edge of what Asterisk can do, or possibly
beyond its current capabilities. Neither myself nor anyone else working
on this project has anything more than very basic programming skills,
but do have much knowledge and experience of compiling, installing and
configuring open-source software. Am I wasting my time, or should I
continue to persevere? If the latter, could anyone provide me some
pointers?

Asterisk can do a lot out of the box, but multi-way video conferences +
video on demand is not there yet afaik.
I think there are some other add-ons that can do the trick, google for
vmukti or adiance.
The video on demand, its not there but it sound easier to make than the
video conferencing.

This is tricky. We use app_conference here but its only for "switched"
video conferences where people can see only one video and select it with
DTMFs.
If you need video mixing in H.264, you need to be aware that it is very
demanding in terms of CPU. Sergio has a videomixer but working in H.263
not H.264.
We are testing the MCU from Orange Labs that has this and for the
moment, the results in H.264 are disapointing. There is a great deal of
tuning to be done before
any solution would work smoothly. Sergio mentionned (and I agree with
him) that any serious and scalable solution for H.264 video conferencing
should be based
on dedicated hardware.

Videotelephony is a fascinating but tricky subject. If you are not ready
to spend a LOT of time with it, I would advise you to seek some (paid)
assistance from the numerous professionals that are reading this list.
Otherwise, welcome to the club! We'll try to help you with the limited

Have a look at app_conference, this fits your need.

Yes but Sergio, authot of app_mp4 has some coding skills ... If there is a budget for your project. You might ask him to improve app_mp4.
