Fritz Box is a device that makes possible to use PSTN phone and voip telephony over DSL. At the back of the device you can find several connections – DSL (for telephone line access), LAN (for local area network connection – PC, Switch, Hub), USB (for connection with pc or notebook), ISDN (for isdn or analog telephone line), FON1 and FON2 (for PSTN phones) and power-supply adaptor.
To open the web interface where to adjust the device just open a browser and type ‘fritz.box’ or ‘192.168.178.1’. If you cannot see this IP address change your IP address to one that is in the 192.168.178.1 network. After this you can change the Fritz Box’s IP address to one that is in your network and then change your network configuration to the old settings.
Now open the web interface and configure your Internet settings. Select internet/Account Information and enter the username and password that you have for Internet access.
Further on you can see the DSL Settings, I prefer to enable the recommended features (Optimize data flow and filtering for DSL modem). ATM parameters can be detected automatically and manually.
In the submenu ‘Port Forwarding’ you can forward the data flow for client or server application from one port to another.
Here you can see information and statistics for your DSL connection.
In Telephony/Call List there is information for every call made – destination, number dialed, etc.
In Internet Telephony you can define telephone accounts. Here you register an account existing in Asterisk. I prefer to select the voice detection and speech compression options in order to reduce the bandwidth in the channel.
Here is how you can add new Internet account – username and password that are defined in Asterisk and IP address for the Asterisk PC. When the user is registered you will see it in the command line interface on asterisk or in the ‘Event Log’ submenu of ‘System’.
In ‘Extensions’ you can say what kind of extensions are valid for the different PSTN lines. I choose to allow all numbers.
Here in ‘Dialing Rules’ you can add prefix for the fixed-line network calls to be automatically added for every call. You can also define numbers or number ranges that are allowed to be dialed through Fritz Box. As you can see according to the settings above all 0800 and 0900 calls are permited.
In System the first submenu ‘Event Log’ is a place where you can see what is happening in every single moment. Use ‘Refresh’ to update the information shown in the window.
Here in ‘Network Devices’ you can see the computers that have access to Fritz Box. If you connect the Fritz Box to some local switch or hub you can connect as many PCs to the Fritz box as your hub or switch permits.
‘Network Settings’ is a submenu where you can adjust the IP of the Fritz box for the local network. As you see Fritz box has to be connected to your local network (has some IP address valid within your LAN) and to the public network (knows your real IP address and username and password to access it).
Here you can see my local IP address and subnet mask settings.
You can also set password protection for the Fritz box if you do not want unauthorized people to access it.
In ‘Firmware Update’ you can upgrade the firmware version you have. To install the latest firmware image available just go and download it from http://www.avm.de/en/Download/. Then browse the image location on your hard rdive and install it.

Lawrence (docsharp01 at hotmail dot com) 22 February 2008 15:46:47 This is an excellent article about DSL. However, satellite DSL should be considered as an alternative, particulary in rural areas without regular DSL access.

Paolo (pdv at aruba dot it) 04 October 2007 10:45:13 Hi, do you know if it's possible to remotely administrate the Fritz? I used it in the past with a speedtouch and I found very strange that it can't be done in such a great object.
Probably it's my fault and I ask you for help!
Thank you in advance!

David (muskett at europe dot com) 17 June 2007 12:54:13 Hi,
I am looking to roll out Fritzbox on several locations where we have satellite offices that need to communicate with the head office and, of course, to anywhere else using voip.
I realise that on a single POTS line there is no problem, what I am not sure is how to implement at the head office where there is an exchange, POTS.
For example, if I put the FB on my extension, then anyone who calls me should be diverted via the voip account to my remote location. I think that is OK.
But, if I call into the switchboard and want to access a specific extension, how does that need to be set up?
Alternatively, I could set up another FB and extension to call the switchboard operation. To me that sounds messy, 2 FB´s and occupying 2 extensions.
Any good ideas?
Thanks
jan visscher (janvisscher at yahoo dot com) 24 April 2007 04:33:24 I bought a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7050 Annex A, Firmware Version 14.03.91 in the Netherlands and I use it in Indonesia. I have installed the device using my DSL line. Everything works properly: I can browse the internet, etc.
I have a registered Voipbuster account but when I want to use my normal phone to make outgoing calls to landline or mobile numbers with Fritzbox via the internet, I always get a bussy tone. So outgoing calls via the internet I can't make. Does anyone have a solution to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.

My fritzbox is "Annex A", however would it hurt to download the annex a firmware from fritz box website and install it on my fritzbox? The website didn't specify "FRITZ!BOX FON 5010 SL", it just said "FRITZ!BOX FON". My firmware version is 48.04.14, as where the download version was 6.04.20.

your tutorial is great. thank you.
I have one of the 7050 boxes, I bought it in germany and I have it connected in portugal. it forwards my pstn/isdn entering calls to my asterisk pbx, but I have one big problem with that configuration. when the calls enters the asterisk it has no CLI, but the web interface of the FritzBoz has it, do you know what I have to change to have the CLI forwarded to my Asterisk server?
Thanks in advance,

Rizwan (rizSher at hotmail dot com) 14 June 2006 10:16:36 Hello,
Coudl you please clarify for me if the the fritzbox interfaces with PSTN line to allow VoIP to PSTN and PSTN to VoIP calls?. I currently use a Linksys SPA3102 (new version of SPA3000), which lets me make vOip calls when I'm away from home by calling my home phone line connected to the SPA, getting authenticated by CallerID of my Cellphone, and then I'm able to make calls using the VoIP service. Similarly, any calls coming to my VoIP Incoming DID number get forwarded to my cellphone thru the home POTS line.
Thanks in Advance.
